Kenpo Karate is a martial arts program that combines karate, grappling, kickboxing and sword fighting into a single program. This approach gives students a multi-faceted approach to martial arts. Students learn a wide range of self-defense skills in a safe, encouraging environment. We do not combine adults and children in Kenpo Karate classes since adults and children learn at different paces. In order to keep classes on pace with all students, we offer separate classes for adults and for youth.
Respect. Bravery. Honor. Health.
Nothing worthwhile can last without a proper foundation. Cummings Martial Arts is based on four cornerstones: Respect, Bravery, Honor and Health. Our programs, our curriculum, and our teaching is based on these important values. We teach our students the importance of each, and how they apply not only to learning martial arts, but also to life itself. Other lessons include focus, coordination, discipline, self-respect, kindness and dedication as well as self-worth and self-confidence.
Instructor Jamie Cummings is a seasoned blackbelt with over 25 years' experience. Jamie worked with Greensboro Martial Arts legend Mike Carr for many years before eventually taking over Mike's business in 2017. In the Fall of 2022, the studio changed its name to Cummings Martial Arts (see 2022 flyer here). Jamie's teaching style is one of positive reinforcement and goal-based motivation. His students learn at their own pace in a private setting, earning the respect of his students.
Parents often find themselves choosing between karate classes and team sports for their children. While both teach important lessons about teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness, martial arts also offers additional, long-term benefits. Our curriculum also teaches self-confidence, self-defense, individual achievement, and offers year-round training. Equally important are the lessons of self-control, respect, honor and other life skills that extend well into college and beyond.
Karate also helps with college applications. Paul Kanerek, Chief of Staff for CollegeWise and SVP of the Princeton Review, agrees: “Martial Arts look great on a student’s college resume. Success in martial arts shows control and discipline, and earning a black belt shows a tremendous amount of dedication and commitment. Many students play football, basketball and other sports; but not many earn a black belt.”
When Rylan was starting third grade, we decided to try out a demo class with Mike Carr Karate (now Cummings Martial Arts) at the Liberty location. Rylan was honestly a little skeptical if he would like it, but he enjoyed that first class so much we are now starting our fourth year of karate with Mr. Jamie and Rylan has worked his way up to interim black belt. As a parent, I can not begin to express how much this program has benefited Rylan. Not only has he learned valuable martial arts skills, but he has learned so much about discipline, leadership, kindness, and setting goals. Cumming Martial Arts has built a confidence in Rylan that has helped him in so many areas outside of martial arts. He is now a junior assistant with the younger classes and is working hard to earn his black belt. Now as a middle school student, we are so thankful that he took a chance with that demo class back in third grade. Our family greatly appreciates the energy, dedication, and compassion that Jamie and Autumn pour into this program to make it the success it is. Rylan's favorite day of the week is "KARATE DAY!" -- Robin K, Greensboro
